Argues there is no reason why Pocono Raceway can reopen in Yellow Phase, but Selinsgrove Speedway cannot
Washington, D.C. – Congressman Fred Keller (R-PA) on Monday called on Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf to provide parity in the reopening of raceways across Pennsylvania after the Governor announced during his press conference today that Pocono Raceway can reopen for the Pocono 500 should Monroe County move to the Yellow Phase and NASCAR runs the race without fans.
Before Snyder County moved into the Yellow Phase just over a week ago, Gov. Wolf’s office told the Selinsgrove Speedway—and other raceways and speedways in areas entering the Yellow Phase—they could reopen under the same standards, but later revoked that permission noting the racetracks were considered entertainment and could not open until the counties enter the Green Phase.
“Once again, Gov. Wolf has shown his business shutdown order is inconsistent and heavy-handed. I’m glad that Pocono Raceway will be permitted to race once Monroe County enters the Yellow Phase, but how is Selinsgrove Speedway or any other raceway different? By having different standards for the same form of entertainment, Gov. Wolf is picking winners and losers and proving he lacks a cogent plan to re-open Pennsylvania,” Congressman Keller said. “This kind of behavior is irresponsible, does further harm to Pennsylvania’s economy, and raises more questions than answers. Given today’s announcement, I call on Gov. Wolf to provide parity in raceway and speedway reopening standards and safely and swiftly move to reopen all sectors of Pennsylvania’s economy.”
