Williamsport Area High School alumnus Demarr Wright is returning to his alma mater as the new head girls’ basketball coach.
The 1990 grad replaces Derek Slaughter, who coached for the high school’s last nine seasons. Wright comes to WAHS after serving as head girls’ basketball coach at Loyalsock Township School District from 2010-2015. There, he guided his teams to two district championship games, winning one and advancing to the state tournament both times.
As a coach, Wright has led 1,000-point scorers and helped players prepare for college basketball. He also was an assistant boys’ basketball coach at WAHS for six years under Head Coach Allen Taylor.
“It is great to be back at my alma mater,” he said. “I’m excited about this opportunity and the challenge ahead of us. Williamsport is the only place I would want to coach. Our team goal this year is the make the district playoffs and improve throughout the season. We want to get better each week and each game.”
The team has started off-season workouts for the girls in the program.
