MONTOURSVILLE–Bri Ulmer prepared for the set piece knowing if the ball came her way she would have an advantage in the air.
The ball did come Ulmer’s way and her advantage showed as she headed a ball over her defender and the Loyalsock keeper for a goal.
Ulmer assisted on the Warriors’ first goal and nearly scored on another header as Loyalsock fell 3-0 under the lights at Montoursville.
The win capped a tough, but successful week for the Warriors, who picked up wins over Lewisburg and Loyalsock to remain undefeated at 9-0.
“We made some adjustments in the second half and they were affective for us,” Montoursville coach Vic Gorini said. “The kids got into positions they were more comfortable in and they started to execute on the field and things worked out for us.”
Things certainly worked out for the Warriors, who scored all three of their goals in the second half of the game.
In the first five minutes of the half, Ulmer crossed a ball by Loyalsock’s backline to find Caroline King for the game’s first tally.
“It didn’t change the game that much, Loyalsock kept bringing the pressure,” Gorini said. “Usually that’s a little more of a relief, but tonight we knew we would have to keep battling the rest of the way.”
Montoursville recorded eight shots through the first 40 minutes with just two going on target. In the second half, the Warriors recorded 11 shots with six going on target and three going for goals.
“We have the technical and physical advantage over most teams,” Ulmer, who scored Montoursville’s final goal, said. “Nobody out here wants to lose. We don’t let a bad touch get to us for too long.”
After assisting on the first goal, Ulmer capitalized through the air after a penalty was called on Loyalsock. Ulmer nearly scored a second goal in similar fashion a few minutes later. She finally broke through with four minutes left for her second goal.
“That was kind of a fortunate bounce there for us,” Gorini said. “We told her to keep working and eventually something would go in and it did.”
Loyalsock had plenty of chances and nearly cashed in during the final 20 minutes of the first half.
Rhiallie Jessell nearly scored when she pushed a shot through from the 18. The shot was high, but Marlene Bassett was there to stop the attempt.
“We just put the pressure on,” Loyalsock coach Ben Comfort said. “We created chances and got unlucky a couple of times.”
Karyn Saar made her first varsity start for Loyalsock and made a nice finger-tip save in the first half to keep Montoursville off the board. Ulmer moved a ball across the face of the goal and Saar made a diving save to push the ball away front the net.
