Williamsport, PA — The Crosscutters used a two-run 8th inning to complete the come-from-behind win over the Mahoning Valley Scrappers, to complete their first series sweep of the season.
Seranthony Dominguez got the start for the Crosscutters and went the first six innings, allowing one run on two hits with a walk, striking out four batters in his first no-decision of the season.
Mahoning Valley’s lone run came in the top of the 5th inning against Dominguez.
After Jodd Carter reached on a swing strike three wild pitch to lead off the inning, Dominguez was called for a balk moving Carter into scoring position for Logan Ice. Ice followed with a RBI single through the left side of the infield to give the Scrappers a 1-0 lead.
The run, was the first of the series that was scored against either team’s starting pitchers in the series and was also the first run of the series that was scored before the 8th inning.
Williamsport battled back in the bottom of the 8th, starting the frame with a lead off walks drawn by Luke Williams and Darick Hall to give the Cutters runners on 1st and 2nd with no body out.
Luis Encarnacion rang a Ryan Perez offering off of the left field wall that scored Luke Williams and advanced Hall to 3rd. On the play, Encarnacion was tug out trying to advance to second base. The RBI was the 2nd of the season for Encarnacion as it tied the game at 1-1.
After a Luke Maglich strikeout, Enmanuel Garcia grounded a ball down the 3rd base line, feilded by Scrappers 3rd basemen Grofi Cruz. Cruz’s throw would come up short at 1st base and not be picked by Nate Winfrey allowing Darick Hall to score the go-ahead run, making it 2-1 Williamsport.
The Crosscutters bullpen continued their solid work of late as Blake Quinn, Grant Dyer and Jake Kelzer combined for three scoreless innings of relief out of the Cutters bullpen, allowing two hits and recording six strikeouts, all in their professional debuts.
Quinn faced the minimum in the 7th, striking out a pair while working around a one-hit single. Dyer followed with a perfect 8th, striking out the side, getting all three Scrappers batters swinging. Kelzer closed the door, picking up a strike out and working around a two-out hit in the process.
The Crosscutters bullpen has put together a string of 20.1 innings of relief in which they have allowed just one earned run while striking out 23 batters. In that span, the bullpen has picked up three wins.
Williamsport hits the road as they start a six-game road trip, with the first stop being against the Auburn Doubledays at Falcon Park. Felix Paulino makes his second start of 2016 for the Williamsport Crosscutters as he will be opposed by Wilber Pena, who will be making his second start for the Auburn Doubledays. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
