Lowell, M.A.. – Crosscutters starting pitching had been the focal point through the first four games of the season, but the Lowell Spinners would get to starter Bailey Falter for five runs in the first two innings en route to their 6-4 win and sweep of the Cutters Tuesday night.
Lowell would score their first three runs of the game in the bottom of the first inning, against Falter. Falter walked the first two batters of the inning putting runners on first and second with no one out. Despite the two walks, Falter would get Tyler Hill to ground into a five-three double play started by third basemen Lucas Williams that left a runner on second with two outs.
Falter would hit Ryan Scott with a pitch to put runners on first and second for Victor Acosta who would rip a two-run triple to deep right field that would score both Jagger Rusconi and Scott to give the Spinners a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Yoan Aybar would follow the Acosta triple with an RBI single of his own to extend the Lowell lead to 3-0. Lowell would load the bases on two more walks, but Falter would be able to get out of the inning allowing just the three runs.
The three runs scored by the Spinners in the 1st inning were the first runs scored in the first five innings of any game in the series.
Lowell would add two more runs in the 2nd inning against Falter, scoring their first run scoring on an Arquimedez Gamboa throwing error that allowed Tyler Hill to reach and Matt McLean to score the Spinners fourth run of the night. Victor Acosta capped the scoring in the 2nd inning with an RBI single that scored Tyler Hill giving the Spinners a 5-0 lead after two innings.
The Crosscutters would not go down without a fight however, being able to plate four-unanswered runs, bringing the deficit within one entering the bottom of the 8th inning.
The Crosscutters had trouble getting the offense started as they went down in order in the first four innings against Spinners starter Darwinzon Hernandez.
Williamsport would get their first run of the night in the top of the 5th inning, which Darick Hall opened with his first double of the season to deep center. Hall would score on a passed ball by Spinners catcher Nick Sciortino to give the Cutters their first run of the night and cut the lead to 5-1.
Juan Luis led of the top of the 6th with a single and reached second base on a wild pitch. With one out in the inning Luke Maglich drive a ground ball single into right that scored Luis and cut the deficit to three at 5-2. The RBI was Maglich’s 1st of the season and of his career.
Darick Hall wasn’t finished providing offense for Williamsport, as the left-handed DH drove a 2-2 Pat Goetze offering over the center field wall for his first professional home run, to cut the Spinner lead to 5-3 in the top of the 7th. Hall’s home run was the first hit by Williamsport this season.
Luis Encarnacion would follow Hall’s blast by reaching on a two-base error by Spinners shortstop Carlos Tovar, who couldn’t haul in a tower pop-up in shallow left field. Encarnacion scored on an RBI ground out by catcher Gregori Rivero to bring the Cutters within one. The RBI was the first for Rivero this season.
Lowell would be able to sneak one more run across in the bottom of the 8th inning as Tucker Tubbs scored on a Jose Nin wild pitch to extend the Spinners lead to 6-4 through 8 innings.
The Cutters would threaten in the 9th inning, getting the go-ahead run to the plate before Spinners closer Gersun Bautista was able to close the door on his 2nd save of the season.
Williamsport’s mid-inning rally was backed by two solid outing from the bullpen, as both Carlos Indriago and Alex Kline combined to work five shut out innings.
Indriago finished with three innings of shutout ball, allowing just three hits and a walk while Kilne finished with two shut out innings, allowing a walk and striking out three in his professional debut.
Williamsport returns home tomorrow night for a three-game series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers at BB&T Ballpark. Adonis Medina makes his second start of 2016 for the Williamsport Crosscutters as he will be opposed by Micah Miniard, who will be making his second start for the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
