Batavia, NY — Williamsport suffered a doubleheader sweep at the hands of the Batavia Muckdogs, seeing their losing streak extend to four-straight games.
Batavia was able to get out to an early lead against Crosscutters starter Julian Garcia, getting a RBI single fromRicardo Cespedes that scores Sam Castro to give the Muckdogs a 1-0 lead.
Garcia settled in, tossing back-to-back scoreless frames including striking out the side in the bottom of the 2nd inning.
Ty Curtis got to Garcia in the bottom of the 4th inning, drilling a two-run home run to left field, scoring Lazaro Alonso to give the Muckdogs a 3-0 lead. It was the third home run that Garcia has allowed this season.
Batavia added two more runs in the bottom of the 5th inning against Garcia, using a wild pitch and a RBI sacrifice fly from Ty Curtis to extend the lead to 5-0.
Williamsport did not go quietly, getting a run in the top of the 6ht inning, as Malvin Matos raced home on a wild pitch to cut the deficit to 5-1.
In the top of the 7th, the Crosscutters stormed back, scoring three runs while sending nine to the plate. Rodolfo Duranpicked up his 5th RBI with a single in the 7th, giving him his 1st RBI since July 5th at State College, going 25 games without a run batted in.
Nick Maton drew a bases loaded walk to bring the Crosscutters within one at 5-4, giving Maton his 11th RBI of the season.
With the bases loaded and two outs, Jhailyn Ortiz struckout on a pitch in the dirt that got away from the catcher Michael Hernendez, allowing Duran to race home and score the tying run. Unfortunately the Cutters would leave the bases loaded in the inning.
After the Cutters failed to score a run in the top of the 8th inning, Batavia was able to load the bases with one out. Luis Ramirez uncorked a wild pitch, allowing Lazaro Alonso to score the game winning run to give the Muckdogs the win in game one.
Garcia finished the outing, tossing six innings, allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits and a walk, The right-hander struck out seven batters in the no decision.
In the second game of the doubleheader, the Crosscutters got a great start from David Parkinson, who was making his first professional start.
The Cutters took advantage of a throwing error by 2nd basemen Demetrius Sims in the top of the 1st inning to plateJake Scheiner and take a 1-0 lead against Muckdogs starter Taylor Braley.
Williamsport plated another run in the top of the 3rd inning, as Nick Maton was able to race home on a wild pitch, giving the Cutters a 2-0 advantage.
Brian Mims welcomed reliever Colton Hock to the ball game with a double off the wall in right field. Luis Encarnacion plated Mims with a one out RBI double down the right field line, to give the Crosscutters a 3-0 lead in the top of the 4th. It was the 3rd RBI of the season for Encarnacion.
David Parkinson was lights out in his longest outing of the season, tossing five shutout frames, allowing just one hit and three walks, while striking out a career-high 10 batters. Parkinson struck out the side in the 4th and the 5th innings, capping a brilliant start.
Orestes Melendez took over for Parkinson in the bottom of the 6th inning. After getting the lead off batter to pop out, the next seven batters reached against Melendez, getting an RBI double from Alanso to make it 3-1.
Marcos Rivera plated two more runs with a double to tie the game at 3-3 with one out. Factoring Parkinson out of the decision, after a great start.
With the bases loaded, Melendez walked David Gauntt to give the Muckdogs a 4-3, capping the scoring in the inning, and giving Batavia their first lead of the game.
Williamsport got a pair of walks in the top of the 7th inning, but could not get a run across against Hock, who earned his first professional win.
Williamsport wraps up their series and their six-day road trip tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Dwyer Stadium.
