WILLIAMSPORT–As much as things change around Warrior Run and Loyalsock girls soccer they ultimately stay the same.
After both teams opened with wins, Warrior Run made the trip to Loyalsock for a night game on the turf.
Both teams brought the defenses and keepers as, despite going into extra time, no goals were scored, resulting in a 0-0 tie.
The long game in the heat is just the start as both teams play home games Monday.
Warrior Run welcomes in Southern Columbia and South Williamsport will make the trip to Loyalsock for a late game under the lights.
As for Saturday’s game, both teams has chances, but the defenses ultimately controlled the game.
“It might have taken the first 15 minutes for us to settle down, but we did what we needed to do tonight,” Loyalsock coach Ben Comfort said. “We created opportunities late, but this is just the type of game you’re going to get. If you don’t put one of your chances away you’re not going to get too many to do it on either side.”
Loyalsock had chances late in the game.
With 6:09 left in regulation Myriah Saar broke away from the defense and had a scoring chance. The attempt went wide of the net. A few moments prior to the breakaway Sam Stopper logged Loyalsock’s first shot on goal with an attempt from distance.
Once in extra time, the Lancers continued to push as Juliana Cruz nearly turned a corner kick into a goal. She headed a ball at the net and forced a Warrior Run defender to clear the ball.
Loyalsock recorded another scoring chance when Rhiallie Jessell and Saar put together a nice give-and-go at the middle of the field. The effort earned a shot, but once again it went wide of the mark.
“You have to work hard,” Comfort said. “I told the girls the chances might not come early, but they will come late for us. we subbed a little more than they did and they got on their heels a little bit.”
It was all about the defense in the first half as both attacks were neutralized as they approached the goal.
Warrior Run possessed the ball less than Loyalsock, but took full advantage of chances when they presented themselves. The Defenders posted four shots in the first half with three going on target. Loyalsock only recorded two shots without a single one going on goal.
“It was just a great game by two great teams,” Warrior Run coach Jen Allen said. “It was a fun game to watch.”
Gabby Heiss stole the show for the Defenders. She played like three people on the backline, stopping runs by Loyalsock and limiting corner kick chances.
“She just so calm and cool and collected,” Allen said. “She just gets to the ball. I don’t know how she does it.”
