Medina Suffers Second Loss Against Yanks

Cutters Postgame Recap

Williamsport, PA. — Adonis Medina suffered his 2nd consecutive loss of the season, as he and the Crosscutters fell to the Staten Island Yankees 5-3 at home Thursday night. Medina allowed a season-high two home runs in the loss.

Staten Island got off to a quick start against Medina, using a pair of home runs in the 2nd inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead. Angel Aguilar picked up the first home of the inning, drilling a high fastball over the left field wall. It was his 2nd home run and 7th RBI.

Ben Ruta, who entered the game batting .050 on the season, drove a Medina offering over the wall to drive home a pair. For Ruta, it was his 1st home run and his 2nd & 3rd RBI of the year.

David Martinelli got the Cutters on the board in the bottom of the 4th inning, taking an adventurous trip around the bases. Martinelli grounded back to Yankees starter Freicer Perez, who bobbled the come-backer, but tried to get Martinelli with an underhand toss that went wide of 1st. Martinelli, credited with an infield single, took 2nd on the throwing error.

Later in the inning, Martinelli took 3rd base on a Perez offering in the dirt, but catcher Jerry Seitz threw the ball down the left field line allowing Martinelli to score and get the Cutters on the board.

That would be the only run allowed by Perez over his six and a third innings of work. Perez finished the night with four strikeouts while allowing three hits and three walks. Perez earned his 2nd win of the season.

Medina finished the night, tossing five innings, allowing five runs, three earned, while allowing six hits, two walks and striking out a pair. Medina has now allowed home runs in back-to-back starts and has surrendered four on the season.

The Cutters made a late charge, plating two runs in the bottom of the 9th, forcing a pitching change with the winning run at the plate, but Juan Luis would go down looking to end the ball game against Justin Kamplain, who earned his 2nd save of the season.

Luke Maglich and Luis Encarnacion each picked up an RBI in the Cutters 9th inning. For Maglich, it was his 14th run batted in this season and for Encarnacion, it was his 9th RBI of the year.

Carlos Indriago and Tyler Hallead combined to toss four shutout innings of relief to help keep the Cutters alive. Indriago allowed three base hits and struck out a batter in his two innings, while Hallead worked around a base hit, facing the minimum, picking up a strikeout in his two innings of work.

With the Crosscutters loss and the State College win, Williamsport is now five game back in the Pinckney Division standings. The Cutters have a game and half ahead of the Hudson Valley Renegades in the Wild Card.

The Crosscutters wrap up their series against the Staten Island Yankees tomorrow night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. At BB&T Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field.
