HUGHESVILLE–For the third time in an equal amount of games Lewisburg pushed Montoursville to the brink.
The No. 8 seeded Green Dragons scored a second half goal from Selena Permyashkin, who beat No. 1 Montoursville’s keeper with a shot over her head.
The goal was all the Green Dragons would get as the Warrior defense clamped down the rest of the half.
Once in overtime a slip and low shot from Kyleigh Balint proved to be the game-winner as it took the Warriors just 10 seconds to score the 2-1 winner in overtime.
It was the third one-goal, overtime loss Lewisburg has suffered at the hands of the Warriors, who moved to 4-0 in overtime games on the season.
“I was very proud of the girls,” Lewisburg coach Jose Vega said. “We are playing a team that was undefeated and the girls played tough.”
The overtime period was done before most players even had a chance to register that fact.
“It was disappointing,” Vega said. “We missed a clearance and it just happened.”
Montoursville celebrated as a deflated Lewisburg team lined up for handshakes at the conclusion.
Despite the disappointment, Lewisburg proved to be nothing but class as every player on the team thanked the officials and coaches.
Permyashkin played an outstanding game for the Green Dragons. Along with scoring their lone goal, Permyashkin led the attack through both halves.
The Green Dragons offense produced four shots and kept after the Warriors throughout the night.
“We step up to the opposition,” Vega said. “We know they are the best and the girls wanted to play Montoursville.”
It was the third overtime game between the two teams this year. The previous two went the way of the Warriors, who squeaked out one-goal overtimes wins on both occasions.
“They just keep control of the mid-field well. We always struggle in that area against them,” Montoursville coach Vic Gorini said. “It’s just one of those matchup things.”
Montoursville’s first goal came when Balint crossed a ball to Caroline King for the tap in.
