Penn College women set to step into NEAC volleyball action

After 10 non-conference matches, the Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s volleyball team steps into North Eastern Athletic Conference competition later this week.

On Tuesday in non-conference at Gwynedd Mercy University, Penn College lost, 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 21-25, 20-25). Statistical leaders for the Wildcats were Breana Hayward, of Morrisdale, with 10 kills; Lauren Slater, of Littlestown, with 25 assists; and Jordyn Smeltzer, of Manchester, with 14 digs.

In non-conference action on Thursday at Elmira College, the Wildcats fell, 3-2 (25-14, 25-23, 22-25, 15-25, 12-15). Among the Penn College leaders were Hayward, with 11 kills, Slater, with 32 assists, and Smeltzer, with 23 digs.

On Saturday in non-conference play at Misericordia University, Penn College lost, 3-1 (25-14, 22-25, 25-12, 25-19), to fall to 2-8 overall. Among the Wildcats leaders were Slater, with 17 assists, and Sophie Coldsmith, of Gettysburg, with 23 digs.

In North Eastern Athletic Conference action this week: In a quadrangular at Keuka College, Penn College faces Keuka (5-3, 2-1) at 5 p.m. Friday, Wells College (7-3, 3-0) at 10 a.m. Saturday and Cazenovia College (0-6, 0-1) at 2 p.m. Saturday.

Last meeting vs. Keuka College: Last Sept. 18, Penn College lost, 3-0. Sophie Coldsmith led the Wildcats with 17 digs.

Last meeting vs. Wells College: Last Sept. 19, Penn College lost, 3-0. Coldsmith led with six assists.

Last meeting vs. Cazenovia College: Last Sept. 19, Penn College lost, 3-0. Felicia Webber led the Wildcats with 11 digs.

GOLF

Led by freshman Zachary Yost’s 78, Penn College opened its golf season on Wednesday at the Keuka College Invitational with a seventh-place finish among 12 teams. Yost, of Johnstown, was just four strokes off the winning pace and, with three other players, the Wildcats ended with a 333, 22 behind leading Oswego.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

At home in non-conference action with Alfred State on Saturday, Penn College won, 3-2. Alexis Trkula, of Leechburg, put the Wildcats ahead just 1:44 into the match before Alfred tied it. Hailee Hartman, of Lampeter, regained the lead for Penn College with a goal at 54:36 before Alfred again knotted the score. Lauren Herr, of Manheim, then scored the game-winner for the Wildcats at 85:06. Alfred led in shots, 15-13 (7-6 on goal), and Penn College led in corner kicks, 6-1.

At home in non-conference action with Penn State Harrisburg on Sunday, Penn College fell, 1-0, snapping its three-match win streak and dropping its overall record to 3-2-1. In a tightly-contested match, Harrisburg led in shots, 10-7 (5-2 on goal), and in corner kicks, 4-2. The lone goal was scored at the 28:50 mark.

In North Eastern Athletic Conference action this week: Penn College (3-2-1, 2-0) is at Wilson College (4-3, 1-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday and at Gallaudet University (1-4, 0-3) at noon Sunday.

Last meeting vs. Wilson College: Last Sept. 20, Penn College dominated the match, leading in shots, 38-1 (19-0 on goal), and getting goals from Valerie Kubalak, Morgan Lutz, Robyn Beddow and Chelsea Zembower in a 4-0 win.

Last meeting vs. Gallaudet University: Last Sept. 18, Beddow, Jane Herman, Christina Weber and Caitlin McCarthy scored goals in a 4-0 Penn College win. The Wildcats out-shot Gallaudet, 35-3 (16-0 on goal).

Statistically speaking through Sunday: In conference matches, Penn College has scored six goals and allowed none.

Last meeting vs. Wilson College: Last Sept. 20, Penn College used a second-half own goal and goal from Austin Dowrick for a 2-0 win.

Last meeting vs. Gallaudet University: Last Sept. 18, Penn College got first-half goals from Chris Rutledge, Gerry Lua and Mason Merrill in a 3-1 win

Statistically speaking through Sunday: Penn College scored four goals and allowed two in NEAC action.

On Thursday at Lebanon Valley College, Penn College lost, 9-0, to drop to 0-3.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

In action on Tuesday at crosstown rival Lycoming College, the Wildcats lost, 9-0, to fall to 0-4.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Josh Velez, of Lewistown, finished fifth in 29:39 and Chris Traugher, of Bath, 11th in 30:07 as the Penn College men placed fourth in a 12-team field at Penn State Abington on Saturday. Penn College did not have a women’s team entered, but Ashley Mahaffey, of Hughesville, turned in a time of 34:03.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Penn College will hold its first prospect day from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Oct. 9 in Bardo Gymnasium. The schedule includes: 8:30-9:00 a.m. — registration, 9 a.m.-noon — basketball drills/games, noon-1 p.m. — lunch, 1-2 p.m.— general tour of campus, 2-2:30 p.m. — wrap-up.
