Two Penn College teams close out week with wins
During a week in which only four of seven Pennsylvania College of Technology fall sports teams saw action, the men’s soccer and women’s volleyball squads closed out the stretch in fine fashion with victories.
Men’s soccer
In a physical outing that saw 13 cards doled out to the two teams, Penn College’s Christian Dressler, of McAlisterville, scored late in the first half on a penalty kick as the Wildcats edged PSU Berks, 1-0, in a home North Eastern Athletic Conference match on Saturday. Penn College now is 5-6-1 overall and 2-4-1 in the conference. Wildcats’ goalie Hector Guerrero, of Mexico City, Mexico, recorded five saves in his team’s lone match of the week.
Women’s volleyball
On Tuesday against PSU Berks, Penn College fell 3-0 (25-11, 25-18, 25-13). Courtney Gernert, of Palmyra, and Loralee Lindemuth, of Tidioute, recorded seven kills each while Sophie Coldsmith, of Gettysburg, had 23 assists.
The Wildcats dropped both matches on Friday in the first day of a NEAC crossover weekend, losing to PSU Abington, 3-2 (25-22, 22-25, 12-25, 25-22, 6-15) and to Lancaster Bible College, 3-2 (25-17, 15-25, 25-21, 12-25, 6-15). In the opener, Gernert had 10 kills and 23 digs and against Lancaster Bible she had 15 kills and 18 digs while Coldsmith had 22 assists and 32 digs.
Wrapping up the weekend, Penn College split its matches on Saturday, losing to Gallaudet University, 3-0 (25-9, 25-19, 27-25) and defeating Bryn Athyn, 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 21-25, 25-13), to go to 7-13 overall and 3-6 in the NEAC. Gernert had 10 digs in the opener and Coldsmith had 16 assists. In the nightcap, Gernert had 13 kills and 17 digs and Coldsmith finished with 38 assists.
Women’s soccer
In the annual Battle for the Lumber match against crosstown rival Lycoming College, Penn College lost, 4-2. Valeria Passalacqua, of McAlisterville, scored both of the Lady Wildcats’ goals. Lycoming had 19 shots on goal to eight for Penn College. Lycoming leads the series, 3-2.
Hosting PSU Berks on Saturday, Berks scored four goals in each half en route to an 8-0 win that left Penn College with records of 4-9 overall and 3-5 in the NEAC. Berks dominated play with 21 shots on goal to just two for the Lady Wildcats. Berks also had 13 corner kicks to one for Penn College.
Women’s tennis
On Tuesday, the Lady Wildcats lost to crosstown rival Lycoming College, 9-0. Melissa Stabley, of Cogan Station, extended her opponent to three sets before losing at the No. 1 singles position, 2-6, 6-4, 6-10.
At Wilkes University on Thursday, Penn College dropped a 9-0 decision as the Lady Wildcats failed to win a game in any individual match.
Golf
In a late addition to the schedule, Penn College will compete in the Susquehanna University Fall Invitational today (Monday).
