Williamsport Can’t Avoid Sweep

Cutters Postgame Recap

Norwich, CT — For the second straight night, the Williamsport Crosscutters see an early lead disappear as they fall 2-1 against the Connecticut Tigers. Williamsport was unable to avoid the series sweep as they fall to 3-10 on the road this season.

The Cutters open the scoring in the top of the 1st, capitalizing on a pair of Tigers errors. Luke Williams plated David Martinelli with an RBI single to give Williamsport the 1-0 lead. Martinelli had reached on a throwing error to lead off the game.

The RBI was Williams’ 5th of the season and his third in his last two games. It was also the second time in as many games that Williams’ collected a 1st inning RBI single to score Martinelli, after Martinelli reached on an error to start the game.

Connecticut was able to tie the game in the bottom of the sixth inning , taking advantage of a Williamsport throwing error. The run was the only run allowed by Cutters starter Felix Paulino, who had a strong outing after suffering a loss in each of his last two starts.

Paulino finished the night, tying a season-high with six innings of work, allowing the one run, unearned, on four hits and striking out three in the no-decision.

Just as they did on Tuesday night, the Tigers were able to pick up the go-ahead run in the later stages of the ball game, as Andres Sthormes doubled into right-center to plate Tanner Donnels, off of Cutters reliever Grant Dyer, to take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the 7th.

Williamsport would be able to get the tying run into scoring position in the 9th inning, but would fail to get the run home. The Cutters finished the game 2-for-8 with runners in scoring position and left seven runners on base in the loss.

Darick Hall and Jesus Alastre each finished the night 2-for-4 at the plate. They were the only Cutters batters to record multi-hit games on the night.

The Crosscutters are off tomorrow night, and resume play at home on Friday night as they start a three-game series against the Aberdeen Iron Birds at BB&T Ballpark. The Crosscutters will send Bailey Falter to the mound. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
