SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT–Paige Lentz streaked down the field and found herself looking at an open goal.
Lentz let a shot go, but missed wide right.
It would be the closest South Williamsport would get to scoring as Warrior Run took advantage of early goals in each half to win, 2-0.
“We did our best and stuck right with them,” South Williamsport coach Christa Matlack said. “Our girls just really put the work in today.”
Warrior Run entered Wednesday’s league contest against the Mounties on a one-match winning streak. The Defenders defeated Bloomsburg on the road, 2-0.
Despite their success throughout the first few weeks of the season, the Defenders have struggled in Lycoming County, tying Loyalsock and Williamsport in road matches. Outside of Lycoming County the Defenders are 4-0.
Maddie Beyer recorded Warrior Run’s first goal after she stopped a loose ball in front of the goal. She collected the ball and pushed a low shot through the defense to the right corner of the goal.
Warrior Run posted six shots through the first 40 minutes with two going on target.
Rylie Urbanski broke away from the mid-field at the 10 minute mark of the first half and put a shot on goal.
“To score first is big,” Warrior Run coach Jen Allen said. “It sets the tone of the game.”
“It was an unfortunate series of events that led up to the goal,” Matlack said. “Today we came out strong and really wanted to put one in the net.”
Prior to taking on Warrior Run, South Williamsport had won two of its last three matches, scoring nine goals over the stretch and defeating Wellsboro and Montgomery.
The Mountaineers tied Hughesville 1-1 after two overtimes before welcoming in Warrior Run Wednesday.
In the final two minutes of the first half South Williamsport was finally able to put something together offensively. Bella Green put a high shot on goal, but Welliver was there to stop the shot, jumping over the backline and grabbing the ball out of the air. She stopped another direct kick attempt in the half and neutralized two corners in the second half.
“It helps a lot,” Welliver said of her jumping ability. “I definitely have an advantage with my height being able to get the ball over other girls. Just being able to read the ball and jump over other girls is very helpful.”
