Penn College Basketball Teams Ranked 13th

Pennsylvania College of Technology men’s and women’s basketball teams opened their seasons last week going a combined 1-5, all in non-conference games, and in a preseason poll of North Eastern Athletic Conference coaches both teams were ranked 13th. Conference play begins Nov. 29.

Women’s basketball

For the first time since the 2012-13 season, the Wildcats opened their campaign with a victory as they used a strong second half to knock off Thiel College, 55-48, at home on Wednesday. Tori Wolfe, a 5-foot, 8-inch freshman from Dalmatia, led Penn College with 17 points and 10 rebounds as they rallied from a 28-22 halftime deficit for the win.

On Friday at Arcadia University, Penn College fell, 70-47. Cassi Kuhns, of Loyalsock Township, and Gwendolyn Lavelle, of Pocono Summit, each scored 17 points for the Wildcats. Arcadia scored 36 of its points off 31 Penn College turnovers.

Hosting Westminster College on Saturday, the Wildcats lost, 55-43, to drop to 1-2 overall. Wolfe led the Penn College offense with 15 points.

In the NEAC coaches poll, SUNY Poly, the two-time defending champion, and Lancaster Bible College each had 160 points — Poly got the top nod with eight first-place votes — followed by Morrisville State College 144, Keuka College 115, Penn State Abington 115, SUNY Cobleskill 94, Bryn Athyn College 90, Wells College 87, College of St. Elizabeth 83, Cazenovia College 65, Gallaudet University 63, Penn State Berks 48, Penn College 27 and Wilson College 23.

 

Men’s basketball

Hosting Alvernia University in its season opener on Wednesday, Penn College lost 82-74. Freshman Rob Young, of Abington, led the Wildcats with 23 points and Ben Sosa, of Loyalsock Township, added 21 points and had 10 rebounds.

On Friday at Grove City College, Penn College lost, 65-40. Young led the Wildcats’ offense with seven points. Penn College scored 14 points in the paint to Grove City’s 40.

At Geneva College on Saturday, Penn College dropped an 87-48 decision to fall to 0-3 overall. Young again topped Penn College in scoring with 16 points. The Wildcats were outscored in the paint, 44-12.

In the NEAC coaches poll, champion Morrisville State College earned the top spot with 165 points, followed by Lancaster Bible College 147, SUNY Poly 146, Wells College 134, Gallaudet University 127, Cazenovia College 105, Penn State Abington 86, Bryn Athyn College 66, Keuka College 61, College of St. Elizabeth 59, Wilson College 58, SUNY Cobleskill 49, Penn College 38 and Penn State Berks 33.
