Penn College teams enter new conference play

Pennsylvania College of Technology men’s and women’s soccer teams got their first taste of action in the North Eastern Athletic Conference during the week and the women’s volleyball team won all three of its matches.

Women’s volleyball

In three close games against Keystone College on Wednesday, the Lady Wildcats prevailed 25-23, 25-22 and 25-21. Courtney Gernert, of Palmyra, led the winners with 15 kills and 10 digs while Sophie Goldsmith, of Gettysburg, had 25 assists and Samantha Pogash, of St. Clair, had 12 digs.

At home on Saturday, Penn College outdid PSU Harrisburg, 25-16, 25-17, 25-19, and King’s College, 25-20, 25-18, 19-25, 19-25, 15-13, to improve to 4-2 overall. Gernert led the Wildcats with 25 kills in the two matches while Bridgette O’Leary, of Altoona, had 17 kills and Coldsmith had 63 assists.

Men’s soccer

An own goal and individual goals from Tarik La Roche, of Milton; Jared Daku, of Danville; and Tristan Smith, of Sandys, Bermuda, lifted Penn College to a 4-1 win Tuesday over Alfred State College. Ron Garcia, of Brentwood, New York, assisted on the last two Wildcat goals and keeper Hector Guerrero, of Mexico City, Mexico, logged seven saves.

At SUNY IT Saturday in their first-ever NEAC match, Smith put the Wildcats out in front with a goal in the 25 th minute but the home team tied the score in the 87 th minute and won it in the first minute of overtime, 2-1. Penn College now is 2-1 overall.

Women’s soccer

Penn College evened its record at 1-1 on Thursday with a 2-0 home win over Baptist Bible College. Robyn Beddow, of Lancaster, scored the Lady Wildcats’ first goal on an assist from Hailee Hartman, of Lampeter, and Laresa Paden, of Mifflintown, added the second goal. Keeper Colleen Bowes, of Wayne, was perfect in goal with nine saves.

Competing in the NEAC for the first time, Penn College lost at SUNY IT, 1-0, on Saturday. The Lady Wildcats managed just one shot on goal, and SUNY IT scored its only goal in the 86 th minute as Penn College dropped to 1-2 overall.

Cross-country

Daniel Flynn, of Blairstown, New Jersey, placed ninth in 33:44 and Nathan Mashack, of Bloomsburg, was 12 th in 34:44 as Penn College finished eighth in a nine-team field Saturday at the 8K Penn State Abington Invitational.
