3 Penn College sports teams taste victory
All eight of the Pennsylvania College of Technology fall sports teams were in action last week and wins were recorded by the men’s and women’s soccer teams and men’s tennis squad.
Golf
The Wildcats opened their season Wednesday at the Keuka College Invitational at Lakeside Country Club in Penn Yan, New York, and finished seventh in a nine-team field after shooting a 353. SUNY Delhi “A” won the team competition with a 316 score. Individually for Penn College, Ned Baumbach, of Elizabethtown, tied for 10th in the 46-player field after shooting an 81. Also for Penn College, Caleb Ginder, of Lebanon, and Evan Johnson, of Towanda, each shot 89, tied for 30th; Ryen Persun, of Linden, recorded a 94, tied for 40th; and Tyler Marks, of Forked River, New Jersey, shot a 95, tied for 42nd. The top four individual scores count for the combined team score.
Men’s soccer
In non-conference play last Sunday against Westminster College, Penn College lost, 6-2. Trailing 5-0, Dan Hibbs, of Loyalsock Township, put the Wildcats on the board when he scored on a penalty kick at the 59:06 mark. Dane Cessna, of Meadville, scored the other Penn College goal at the 85:40 mark before Westminster closed things out. Westminster also led in shots, 25-6, and corner kicks, 10-3.
Returning to North Eastern Athletic Conference action on Friday, the Wildcats defeated Gallaudet University, 3-1. Scoring goals for Penn College were Chris Rutledge, of Macungie; Gerry Lua, of Biglerville; and Mason Merrill, of Rome, as the team went to 1-1 in the conference and 5-3 overall.
Women’s soccer
Hosting Westminster College in non-conference action last Sunday, Penn College lost, 3-0. Westminster also led in shots, 15-4, and corner kicks, 8-2.
On Friday in NEAC play, the Wildcats dominated in a 4-0 victory that improved their conference record to 2-0 and 4-3-1 overall. Offensively for Penn College, Robin Beddow, of Lancaster, had a goal and an assist while Jane Herman, of Greencastle; Christina Weber, of Howell, New Jersey; and Caitlin McCarthy, of State College, all scored goals. Penn College led in shots, 35-3 (16-0 on goal) and in corner kicks, 16-1.
Women’s volleyball
On Friday against Keuka College, Penn College lost its NEAC opener, 3-0 (25-15, 25-11, 25-6). Sophie Coldsmith, of Gettysburg, led the Wildcats with 17 digs and seven assists.
Back in conference action on Saturday, Penn College fell to Cazenovia College, 25-19, 25-8, 25-9; and to Wells College, 25-10, 25-16, 25-12. Against Cazenovia, Flecia Webber, of West Perry, had 11 digs and against Wells Coldsmith had three kills and six assists.
Cross-country
Competing on Saturday against other NEAC teams in the Penn State Abington Invitational, the Penn College men ended fifth among seven teams in an 8K race and the women sixth in a seven-team field in a 5K event. Chris Traugher, of Bath, led the Penn College men, placing 16th in a field of 42 in 33:30, while Erin Sullivan, of Elizabethtown, topped the Wildcat women, placing 20th among 42 runners in 30:29.
Men’s tennis
Penn College dropped its opener at Wilkes University last Sunday, 9-0.
On Thursday, the Wildcats rebounded with a 6-3 win over Lebanon Valley College to even their record at 1-1. Winners in both their singles and doubles matches for Penn College were Ben Leibig, of Lebanon; Chris Morrin, of Morrisville; Jake Pichola, of Chester Springs; and Seth Strickland, of Morwood.
Women’s tennis
Penn College fell in its opener last Sunday at Wilkes University, 9-0.
On Friday at Lebanon Valley College, the Wildcats lost, 8-1, to drop to 0-2 overall with Melissa Stabley, of Cogan Station, winning in a tiebreaker at No. 1 singles.
