Weather takes toll on Penn College sports teams
Six Pennsylvania College of Technology fall sports teams saw action last week but nearly half of the 14 scheduled events were postponed due to the weather.
Men’s soccer
At home last Sunday in North Eastern Athletic Conference action against SUNY Cobleskill, the Wildcats won, 1-0, as Dan Hibbs, of Loyalsock Township, scored on a penalty kick at the 58:30 mark for his second goal of the season as the team went to 5-6 overall and 3-2 in the conference. Tuesday’s match against Lycoming College was postponed due to a storm.
Women’s soccer
Facing SUNY Cobleskill at home in NEAC play last Sunday, Penn College won, 2-1, with the winning score coming on an own goal. Angela Maniscaico, of Muncy, put the Wildcats on the scoreboard at the 14:57 mark before Cobleskill tied the match at 43:12. Penn College led in shots, 32-6 (11-4 on goal), and in corner kicks, 12-3, to improve to 4-0-1 in the conference.
On Wednesday in non-conference action at Lycoming College in the annual Battle for the Lumber, the Wildcats were edged, 1-0. Colleen Bowes, of Wayne, was strong in the net for Penn College and was backed by a strong defensive effort as Lycoming led in shots, 20-7 (8-3 on goal), and in corner kicks, 9-5, but managed just one goal at the 82:53 mark. Lycoming has won four of the six meetings between the crosstown rivals. Penn College now is 4-5-2 overall.
Women’s volleyball
Last Sunday, Penn College fell in NEAC play against Morrisville State, 3-0 (25-8, 25-21, 25-15).
In conference play on Saturday, the Wildcats lost to Penn State Abington, 21-25, 25-23, 22-25, 20-25, and St. Elizabeth, 19-25, 18-25, 25-20, 20-25, to drop to 1-18 on the season and 0-8 in the NEAC. During the two matches, Kaitlyn Young, of Harrisonburg, Virginia, had 31 digs and Sophie Coldsmith, of Gettysburg, had 29 assists.
Women’s tennis
In action Monday against College Misericordia the Wildcats lost 9-0 and dropped to 0-3. Three other scheduled matches were postponed due to the weather as were two men’s matches.
Golf
On Tuesday at the Susquehanna University Invitational Penn College finished seventh in a nine-team field as its top four golfers combined for a 358. Gettysburg won the team competition with a 305. Leading the Wildcats was Ned Baumbach, of Elizabethtown, who tied for 15th after shooting an 81 and Jordan Hillegas, of Lancaster, who shot an 87 and was 26th.
