STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Taking on the No. 1 Penn State Mont Alto for the Penn State University Athletic Conference championship game, the Pennsylvania College of Technology softball team defeated the top seed 1-0 to capture its first conference championship since 2007. Freshman Jessica Gmerek (Bellefonte) recorded the winning RBI while freshmen Brianne Brewer (Jersey Shore) and Arika Stopper (Williamsport) recorded the shared shutout with Brewer earning the victory. The win is the 12th straight for the Lady Wildcats who now earn a berth to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships in Akron, Ohio.

Brewer started the game for Penn College (18-12, 14-4 PSUAC) throwing the first three scoreless innings allowing no hits while striking out four. In the top of the fourth, Mont Alto walked sophomore Rachael Shaeffer (Hampstead, Md.) and after freshman Macie Lucas (Reedsaville) executed a sac bunt, Gmerek hit a double to score her.

Stopper came in shutting down Mont Alto for the next four innings allowing only two hits with four strikeouts. The Lions stranded four hitters on the base paths in the game.

Penn College totaled three hits with Gmerek, Lucas and sophomore Alexandra Brennan (Saint Clair) each recording one.

The Lady Wildcats will get ready for the USCAA nationals which are slated to begin on May 11.
