Penn College athletic teams put up strong efforts
Pennsylvania College of Technology sports teams went a combined 0 for 5 during the period of Nov. 16-22 but put up strong efforts in each of its outings.
Women’s basketball
In its season and North Eastern Athletic Conference opener on Wednesday, Penn College lost at Gallaudet University, 69-61. Alicia Ross, of Williamsport, led the Lady Wildcats with 19 points while Jamie Steer, of South Williamsport, added 18 points and Charese Bova, of Beech Creek, had 12.
On Saturday against Albany College of Pharmacy in the opening round of the Albany College of Pharmacy Panther Tip-Off Tournament, Penn College fell behind by as many as 16 points in the first half and dropped an 85-66 decision to fall to 0-2 on the season. Bova recorded a double-double for Penn College with 11 points and 11 rebounds while Jamie Steer netted a team-high 16 points for the Wildcats, Ross added 13 points and Hannah Schoenly, of Hamburg, netted 10. In the tournament’s other game, Maine Augusta edged Briarcliffe College, 56-54.
Men’s basketball
Competing against King’s College Friday in the Pepsi Tip-Off Tournament at Susquehanna University, the Wildcats fell, 87-50. James Boylan, of Newtown, New Jersey, scored 11 points for Penn College. In the tourney’s other game, host Susquehanna beat PSU Scranton, 99-57.
Facing Penn State Scranton in the Pepsi Tip-Off consolation game on Saturday, Penn College dropped to 0-3 overall after a 75-68 loss. The Wildcats led by eight points in the first half before PS Scranton tied the score at 17 with 9:07 to go and opened a 40-26 halftime lead. Penn College used a 20-1 run to help cut the difference to three three times in the second half, the last time at 71-68 with 1:14 remaining, but fell short. Kevin Laurence-El, of Milton, scored 17 points for the Wildcats while Ezra Adams, of Muncy, scored 11 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Host Susquehanna won the tournament with a 67-45 victory over King’s College in the championship game.
Wrestling
Despite scoring its most points in a match so far this season, Penn College dropped a 28-22 decision at Alfred State College on Tuesday. Connor Route, of Canton, scored a pin at 1:37 in the 197-pound weight class to knot the team score at 22 but a forfeit loss at heavyweight sealed the outcome. Jake Stanford, of Montoursville, at 141, and Slade Storm, of New Oxford, at 149, posted forfeit wins for the Wildcats and Tanner Leid, of Terre Hill, earned a major decision at 157.
The Wildcats now are idle until Dec. 4 when they host King’s College in their final home match of the season.
Soccer
Penn College junior Hector Guerrero, of Mexico City, Mexico, was named United States Collegiate Athletic Association Men’s Soccer First Team All-American. The USCAA honors 14 First Team, 14 Second Team and 15 Honorable Mention All-Americans for their outstanding performance on the field. Guerrero notched eight wins in 17 matches last season, with a 1.3 goals against average. He had 105 saves and posted four shutouts.
Also, four Penn College soccer players were named to the USCAA All-Academic team. Student-athletics who earn a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher are named to the team. Wildcats on the squad include men’s soccer sophomore Devyn Tucker, of Heidelberg, Germany, and women’s soccer juniors Laresa Paden, of Mifflintown, and Robyn Beddow, of Lampeter, and sophomore Lindsey Bradshaw, of Bristow, Virginia.
Assistant AD, sports information director named
Matt Blymier was named the college’s assistant director of athletics/sports information director Nov. 17. Blymier spent the past two years at Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine, as the assistant director of athletics/sports information director where he was responsible for the Mariners’ 11 Division III programs. Previously, Blymier was a sports writer for the Lancaster Intelligencer and Lancaster Sunday News, served as a sports information assistant at Franklin & Marshall College and spent three years as an assistant football coach at Donegal High School in Mt. Joy. Blymier earned his master’s degree in sport management from California University (PA) in 2014 and a bachelor’s degree in speech communications from Millersville University in 2005, where he concentrated in broadcasting and minored in athletic coaching.
