Penn College women fighting for basketball playoff spot
Battling for a North Eastern Athletic Conference playoff berth, the Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s basketball team went 1-1 in conference play last week and in the process saw one of its players reach the 1,000-point career scoring mark.
On Saturday, Jamie Steer, of South Williamsport, became just the second Penn College women’s basketball player to reach the plateau with a 27-point performance during the Wildcats’ 93-76 loss at Wells College. Steer, who needed two points to reach 1,000 going into the game, joins her older sister, Kierstin, who graduated in 2013 after scoring 1,246 points during her four-year career.
Also scoring in double figures against Wells were Alicia Ross, of Williamsport, who had 14 points, and Charese Bova, of Beech Creek, whose 11 points and 13 rebounds gave Bova her 13th double-double of the season as the Wildcats dropped to 10-11 overall and 9-7 in the NEAC.
At home against Cazenovia College last Sunday, Steer, scored 24 points and Penn College used a 49-point second half for an 86-76 victory. Also for the Wildcats, Ross and Bova each scored 16 points; Hannah Schoenly, of Shamokin, scored 15 points and Danielle Mowery, of Shamokin, tallied 11. Bova also had 24 rebounds.
Back on the court one night later at Elmira College, the Wildcats lost, 88-66, in non-conference action despite a 27-point performance from Ross. Steer scored 19 points and added 14 rebounds.
Heading into the final week of the regular season, through Saturday’s games, Lancaster Bible College led the South Division with a 15-2 record and was followed by PSU Abington at 13-3, Gallaudet at 10-6, Penn College and St. Elizabeth both at 9-7, Bryn Athyn, 6-10; PSU Berks 1-15 and Wilson College 0-16. The top four teams will qualify for postseason play after regular-season action wraps up Saturday.
Men’s basketball
Hosting Cazenovia College last Sunday, the Wildcats were in the thick of things through the first 11 ½ minutes as they led 29-24. But an 18-2 run by the visitors turned the tide as Cazenovia went on for an 80-61 NEAC win. Kevin Laurence-El, of Milton, led Penn College with 17 points and Antony Griffin, of Philadelphia, added 11 points. Wildcat James Boylan, of Newton, New Jersey, was honored on Senior Day.
Closing out the week on Saturday, Penn College lost at Wells College, 68-58, to drop to 3-18 overall and 2-12 in the NEAC. Griffin led the Wildcats with 13 points and Cass Wisniewski, of Bethel Park, scored 12.
Through Saturday, Lancaster Bible led the NEAC Southern Division with a 14-1 record, followed by Gallaudet at 11-3, PSU Abington and PSU Berks both at 6-9, Bryn Athyn at 5-10 and Penn College and Wilson College both at 2-12.
Special event scheduled
Penn College will host its inaugural Girls and Women in Sports Day Clinic from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 28, at Bardo Gymnasium as student-athletes from soccer, volleyball and basketball will instruct participants on the basics of their respective sport. Each participant, those in kindergarten through sixth grade, will have the opportunity to participate in all three sports. The registration deadline is Friday, Feb. 20.
