Wildcats Weekly #30

Penn College baseball opener postponed

The scheduled baseball opener for Pennsylvania College of Technology at Mary Washington was canceled on Friday after a late-week snowstorm hit Fredericksburg, Virginia, but everything still is on track for the college’s baseball and softball teams as they compete in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, this week where temperatures will be warmer but there is a chance of showers.

Flashback: Women’s basketball

Although his team didn’t reach the NEAC playoffs in its first year in the conference, coach Matt Wilt has to feel good about the fact that it was one of only five teams to beat eventual conference champion Penn State Abington. The Wildcats won at Abington in their next-to-last game of the season and Abington, which finished second in the South Division, went on to beat Morrisville State College, second in the North, 78-47, for the championship last Sunday.

Alicia Ross, a sophomore from Williamsport, led Penn College in scoring this season with 438 points and a 17.5 points per game average. Junior Jamie Steer, of South Williamsport, was second in scoring with 416 points and a 16.6 scoring average while sophomore Charese Bova, of Beech Creek, scored 298 points (11.9 average) and led the team with 356 rebounds (14.2 average). Steer was second in rebounding with 197/7.9. In three seasons, Steer has scored 1,064 points.

The Wildcats, who had no seniors on the team, finished 13-12 overall, 12-8 in the conference. They scored 1,776 points, 71.04 average, and allowed 1,770, 70.8 average.

After five seasons, Wilt’s teams have gone 43-79.

Men’s basketball

Junior Kevin Laurence-El, of Milton, led the Wildcats in scoring during the recently completed season with 221 points and an 11.1 points per game average. Junior Nathaniel Brown, of Philadelphia, was second in scoring with 212 points and an 8.5 per game average. Sophomore Thomas Ross, of Williamsport, topped Penn College with 150 rebounds, an average of 6.0 per game, and sophomore Ezra Adams, of Muncy, pulled down 100 caroms, an average of 7.1 per game. James Boylan, of Newtown, New Jersey, was the lone senior on the team. He scored 126 points (5.0 average) and grabbed 119 rebounds (4.8 average).

Overall, Penn College finished 3-22, 2-16 during its first season in the NEAC. It scored 1,606 points, an average of 64.24 per game, and allowed 1,963, an average of 78.52.

In three seasons under coach Chris Lemasters, who announced his resignation for a career move in January, the Wildcats were 11-64.

A week ago in the NEAC championship game, North Division champ SUNY Cobleskill edged South Division titlist Lancaster Bible, 49-46.

Wrestling

Freshman Slade Storm, of New Oxford, was the only Penn College to finish the season with a winning individual record as he went 14-7. The 149-pounder also led the team in pins with six.

Two other Wildcats finished with .500 records. They were sophomores Troy “Tanner” Leid, of Terre Hill, who went 9-9 with one pin, and Mason Repolgle, of New Enterprise, who went 6-6 with two pins. Leid wrestled mainly in the 157-pound weight class and Replogle at 149.

Kyle Sunseri, a 149-pounder from Athens who finished 6-11 overall, was the lone senior on the squad.

This year, the Wildcats were 2-11 in dual matches. In five seasons under coach Schuyler Frey, Penn College has gone 22-30 in duals.

On the horizon:

Spring seasons for the college’s men’s and women’s tennis and golf teams are just around the corner as men’s tennis begins on March 24, golf on March 28 and women’s tennis on April 3.
