Penn College women’s tennis season to begin
Other than the Pennsylvania College of Technology men’s tennis team starting its season with a win, Mother Nature again was the big winner last week as a host of events either were postponed or canceled. And this week, barring more weather-related disruptions, the women’s tennis team will get its season underway.
Women’s tennis
The Lady Wildcats are coming off a winless fall season but coach Robert Kemrer is hopeful that time spent on the courts since then will begin to pay dividends.
Penn College is scheduled to open its season at 3 p.m. Friday at Bryn Athyn.
“I’ve added a few new players but the issue with this season is that I don’t have any new players with a whole lot of experience, so I’ve still got an extremely inexperienced team. We’re working on improving and the players who are returning from the fall have really improved,” the fourth-year coach said.
Sophomore Melissa Stabley, of Cogan Station, is expected to play at the No. 1 singles position and freshman Morgan Blackwell, of Beech Creek, will open at No. 2, but after that positions remain up in the air. Among those vying for the other singles spots are freshmen Rachael Walker, of Lewisburg; Rachael Gordon, of Greencastle; Kristine Loomis, of Tunkhannock; Erin Jacob, of Royersford; and Mikaila Lugo-Schlegel, of Lebanon.
Doubles teams may consist of Stabley and Blackwell at No. 1, Jacob and Gordon at No. 2 and Walker and Loomis at No. 3, Kemrer said.
“We had a pretty rough fall season (0-6), but I felt like my girls really improved. They were putting in a lot of time and effort.
“It’s hard for a younger team with a lot of inexperienced players to compete against some of the tougher teams. We’re improving and I’m hoping we’ll be just as competitive, if not more, this spring,” Kemrer added.
Men’s tennis
Four Penn College players were winners in both singles and doubles as the Wildcats opened their spring season on Tuesday with an 8-1 non-conference victory at Baptist Bible College. Double winners included Jordan Rodgers, of Biglerville; Ben Leibig, of Lebanon; Chris Morrin, of Morrisville; and Rommel Cressman, of Lansdale. “I was pretty happy,” Kemrer said.
